“YFYIAR” Demo

Here’s the current version of “You Find Yourself In A Room,” the drunken uncle of text-based games.  It’s pretty close to being finished now.

Hm. This game was lovely. Beautiful.

Thing is, I’m playing on 64 bit linux, using Firefox. When I do the “guess a numebr” bit, when I get it right, there is no response. I enter the number, and the text box does not clear out. I just “look” after that and everything works normally from there on, afaik.

My friend said that she got a “the ceiling opens up” message after the guess a number thing, though.

Best text game that I have ever played. It reminds me of Inquisitive Dave for some reason.

Hooray, i beat it. This game is creepy, in a good way. I really like games that make you think, and this was definitley one that made me think. A lot

That was great. I was hoping to find something else good after playing Viricide and this did not disappoint. Are all of your games as messed up (plotwise) as these two? If so I must check them out ^^
    Thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking.

That was a fun game. I was sad when it ended. It needs to be longer.

The repetitious rant of the computer is emotionally provocative and really engages the player in the game, but it is a downfall of the gameplay. I assume any input will progress the monolog. This makes it more of an interactive fiction (with interaction on vacation) than a game. It’s good, but it’s not really a game. Just depends on what you’re going for.

The guessing as to what exact phrase the computer is looking for in order to perform tasks can be tedious. It fits with the misanthropic nature of the computer, but it is analogous to pixel hunting in point-&-clip adventures. Not engaging, just tedious. It’s tolerable the way it is, but it might be worth tweaking.

It would be nice, I think, if more challenge was put into the gameplay. I like the emotional engagement, but if I wanted only that, I’d read a book. I want a game where I have to use my brain to solve obstacles and feel a sense of accomplishment when completed. As it is, it feels more that the game plays you. But maybe that’s the point.

I enjoyed it immensely. The way that the other entity grows to hate you and thinks of himself as perfect is quite well thought-out. I especially loved the ending, with him realizing that he is not perfect and letting you go. Also, for the rooms with the keypads, the first one you must look at the note and subtract the age from the year. The second one is less than1 but greater than -1

  7. #7 by Chris646 on June 11th, 2010

Actually, for the second keypad, just keep entering numbers

  8. #8 by andy on June 13th, 2010

    I can\\\’t get the number :D

but then i was never so good at these things. All i can think of is 1989 form the note

Love the game….i got past both keybads…but now i’m stuck at the bit with the hands.

Can i just check….does this game have a difinitive end?

  10. #10 by andy on June 13th, 2010

Well….i’ve been stuck on the room without hands for a long time now.

A lot of others seem to find this one hard…so perhaps some more explination thier? just a little hint after say 200 text entries?

hehe….other than that i think it’s a really awesome game that really plays upon your frustration.

    get key
    get key
    get key
    get key

    inventory

(I see “jasper” had already mentioned this, btw)

  12. #12 by Zecc on June 15th, 2010

@andy Yes, I got to a point where it says THE END.
Try looking around or examining whatever is mentioned (*cough, blood*).

  13. #13 by Tim D. on June 15th, 2010

Yeah, I had the same problem as Dirjel. When I guessed the number it didn’t respond, then when I typed it again it said it didn’t understand. And kept saying that till I finally typed “look” again. Then it went on as normal.

  14. #14 by Jack on June 22nd, 2010

I love the ending…A being that brags about perfection is tricked by its own sadistic torment and discovers that it too is flawed. Bravo

  15. #15 by srex on June 27th, 2010

Loved the game, but everytime I put in the right number it just repeated the number back to instead of telling me that I was in a new room or whatever.

  16. #16 by andy on July 14th, 2010

    srex.

whenever in doubt….. look *cough* for clues.

You don\’t need to be told you are still in a new room by now.

[btw, thanks zecc. I got it now after you started coughing blood]

I loved this game. Sure it was easy, but it had a great narrative and I thought it was very compelling. The only downfall is the short length, but I suppose one can only handle being insulted for so long. …Actually, the longer the computer expresses its hate, the better the victory should feel in the end.

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEE THIS! ^^

  19. #19 by muffinman on August 6th, 2010

“You may go whenever you wish”

I like how you could have done that before. Even though the you in the game couldn’t.

  23. #23 by Help plz on August 25th, 2010

I got to the bit about the box, have opened it, but have no idea what to do next! A hint please, anyone? xxx

  24. #24 by EddieOwen on August 26th, 2010

Fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed this! Brilliant idea, although I couldn’t get past opening the box I enjoyed where I got up to. Great music too, very mysterious… I do hope you\’ll upload this to Kongregate.

    its even cooler with sound

game is good to go, thou it is kindof short (like a short-story)

one thing thou, when I guess the number right, nothing happened so I kept guessing numbers with the “Try something different” messages poping up; taught it was glitch till I tried looking

  26. #26 by High-Lord Vin on August 31st, 2010

PS if you where to add more content before you finished the game (as it seems you are gona do), then that would be great
